Objectives of the Course
|
The course has three main objectives. The first is to familiarize students with the basic discussions on various concepts, processes and approaches to scientific research and academic knowledge producing process in Islamic studies. The second is to encourage them to put what have learned into practice in writing an academic paper. Within this framework, the students will learn how to make choice of topic, write research proposal and literature review, different methods of data collection and data analysis and division into chapters and sections, styles of referencing and presentation of other research information. The third is teach the students various publishing stages alongside with the ethical issues

Course Content
|
The course will focus on two main areas in Islamic studies, scientific methodology and publication ethics. It will train doctoral students on how to handle a research problem from beginning to end using scientific methods and how to publish research results in different publishing platforms. In this way, students will be given the opportunity to apply what they have learned in a theoretical framework, while increasing their awareness of various types of resources to be used during their studies.

Attendance, classroom rules and academic integrity
The course is will be in a traditional person classroom setting. The course is instructional-led and have 14 weeks of lecture. The instructor will take part in, and guide, the discussions. Such discussions serve as an important assessment point for both teachers and students to assess their understanding and progress.
1. Attendance-Participation: Students are required to attend class regularly and participate in discussions. Questions, feedback, and student interaction are an integral part of the learning process. Students should come prepared, having read the assigned materials prior to coming to class and having course materials accessible during class. Chronic absences, tardiness and leaving early will adversely affect your grade. Students who didn’t attend more then four week classes will automatically fail. Absences due to illness or emergencies must be communicated to the instructor prior to the class. 2. Basic classroom rules: While in class, students are expected to use appropriate language with the instructor as well with each other, have their cell phones on silent and not be involved in personal conversations with each other or any activities which would disrupt the classroom environment. Infraction of these rules will result in a deduction of points from the class participation grade. 3. Plagiarism: The University takes plagiarism, copying someone else’s work and representing it as your own, very seriously. This applies to all work submitted for the course. Plagiarism, academic dishonesty, or cheating will result in an automatic grade of F for the course. If a student’s work is suspected of plagiarism, the student as well the Institute’s office will be notified of the offence and it will be the student’s responsibility to demonstrate evidence reflecting the originality of the work, such as all notes and other materials utilized in developing the submitted work. The instructor may expect the students submit your papers through Turnitin. Turnitin is our university-wide plagiarism checking software. Assesments and Assements In this course, written assignments will be the primary form of assessment. 1. Mid-term Assignment
Each student will be required to create a book review written in their academic field on their own choice in collaboration with the instructor. The paper will be due by the week 7. This will also be considered as mid-term exam. The student should search for the approval of the instructor on the title of the thesis to be reviewed 2. Final Assignment In lieu of final exam, each student should prepare an essay . The essay will be due by the week 13. The students will be required to make a presentation in the classrooms. 4. Special Accommodations: Those who need special help will notify the instructor the beginning of semester.
