Course Description / Dersin Tanımı
This is a survey course covering the history of the Middle East from the late Ottoman period (second half of the 19th century) focusing on major events took place during the ‘long’ 20th century. Many of the social events in the Middle East and challenges the Arab society facing today have historic links with the past. The following can be counted among them - spread of Islamism, conservatism as well as traditionalism, Sunni – Shia relations and politically heightened tension between the two, military takeovers, the challenges ruling elites facing today. The course aims to introduce students to major historical, political and social developments that shaped today’s Middle East in terms of politics, nationalism and social structure and, affected current events in the region.

As the major components of the Arab identity, the course will begin briefly introducing the pre-Islamic (Jahiliya), Islamic, Umayyad and Abbasid periods with special reference to linguistics, poetry and literary traditions. The topics will include but not limited to the Ottoman presence and the regional impact, age of colonialism, rise of nationalisms, stages of the Arab nationalism, emergence of Arab nation states. In-class discussions are integral part of this course; all students are expected to attend the class well prepared and participate in weekly debates.
