Objectives of the Course

This course is keyed to familiarizing the student with the form and content peculiarities of the different types of documents produced by the administrative, scholarly and juridical sectors of the Ottoman bureaucracy.

Considered as a diploma, each such document bears certain special features which have to be assessed and understood in relation to the bureaucratic unit or department that produced and issued it. This includes a refined mastery of the types of script

|
In the classical age as well as the modern era, the central administration utilized scripts known as rika or divani, while Islamic scholars and jurists used others known as talik or nesih, all of which the student has to be able to recognize and decipher.
