Dersin Amacı
|
This intensive course aims to provide students with the necessary tools and skills to be able
to read different types of Ottoman primary sources written in rik'a, divani or ta'lik scripts. It
will also help the students to contextualize and historicize these sources by giving attention
to paleographic and diplomatic details.

Dersin İçeriği
|
Texts selected from historical, literary, religious, and
legal arenas, and reflecting the characteristics of different periods, constitute the main
material for the course. Moreover, there will be an emphasis on the terminology and writing
styles encountered in texts produced by the Ottoman state apparatus such as ferman, berat,
tezkire, irade, arz, fetva, or sicil. In addition to state-centered documents, the course will
also focus on the styles and expressions used by the Ottoman elite in their daily
correspondence (such as tesellinâme and tehniyâne). It is an intensive course equivalent to
two normal semesters’ course load. The graduate equivalent is TLL 509.
