Dersin Amacı Family is considered a fundamental institution in society/societies. Throughout time, however, the institution of family has taken on different forms, served different functions, and underpinned various ideologies regarding society. The role of family, and its impact on society, as well as the impact of changes in society/societies on families, will form the basis of discussion in this course. Changes in society that impact on family involve the status of women, changes to their role as mothers, as well as changes in the role of men, as fathers, breadwinners, and as head of household. In what ways are the definitions of family expanding, and what are the possible consequences of this expanding definition for society? The areas under review and comparison include parenthood and the status of women, working mothers, and the status of men as fathers and head of household. Additionally, the prevalence of divorce, family violence, and changing family forms will be considered. Different theoretical perspectives on the role of family will be reviewed including texts relevant to the weekly topics. Other course materials, which may not strictly speaking be sociological literature, may be presented. This course will help students to further develop their skills as critical thinkers and to reflect on how a comparative perspective might lead to a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the role of family in different societies.
Dersin İçeriği 1. Define core ideas, concepts, and problems relevant to the sociology the family.
2. Learn about important historical changes in ideas regarding family that impact on society/societies.
