Dersin İçeriği Çocukluk nedir ve bu fenomen toplumda nasıl inşa edilmiştir? Bu ders, karşılaştırmalı bir bakış açısıyla toplumdaki çocuklara odaklanmaktadır. Çoğu toplumda çocukların statüsü ve rolüne ilişkin fikirler zaman içinde değişmiştir. Kursun ilk bölümü, geçmişte çocukların nasıl düşünüldüğüne bakacak. Çocuk ve çocukluk fikri, modern toplumda, cennet gibi bir çocukluk masum çağı fikrinden, sosyal problemler olarak çocuklara yoğunlaşmaya kadar belirli bir imaja bürünmüştür. İncelenen ve karşılaştırılan alanlar arasında çocuklar ve çocukluk, boşanmanın etkisi ve değişen aile biçimleri yer alıyor. Farklı teorik perspektifler araştırılacak ve haftalık konularla ilgili bazı temel metinlerin yanı sıra, sosyolojik literatürden tam anlamıyla söz edilmeyen ek ders materyallerinin bir gözden geçirmesi yapılacaktır. Bu ders, öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünürler olarak becerilerini daha da geliştirmelerine ve karşılaştırmalı bir bakış açısının nasıl daha derin ve daha incelikli bir çocukluk anlayışına ve çocukların ve gençlerin bugünün dünyasında karşılaştığı sorunlara nasıl yol açabileceği üzerine düşünmelerine yardımcı olacaktır.

Dersin Öğrenme Çıktıları: Bu dersin başarılı bir şekilde tamamlanmasıyla öğrenciler şunları yapabileceklerdir:

1 Understand the major sociological discussions regarding the sociology of childhood and the family.
2 Demonstrate an ability to think critically and with well-structured and supported arguments regarding the material and literature presented in class.
3 Offer critic, or support, for some of the most well know treaties on children, childhood, and child development.
4 Gain an understanding for critiquing the taken for granted nature of childhood and the lives of youth and children. Critically analyze how the changes in society impact on concepts of childhood as well as critically examining the changing treatment of children and the impact of these ideas on society/societies.
5 Design and write a final argumentative essay paper of his/her own on one of the topics covered in class using the literature discussed in class and at least one example of outside literature researched by the student.
