Type of Course Unit Compulsory
Objectives of the Course (1) To teach students the main concepts and theories in modern physics and chemistry.
(2) To develop literacy in natural sciences.
(3) To develop awareness about connection between important societal topics such as climate change, energy crisis, nuclear technology and basic natural science.
(4) To teach the students methods of the natural sciences.
Course Content The main focus of this course is modern/contemporary physics and chemistry with special emphasis on the societal topics related to these sciences. The purpose of the course is to develop a natural science literacy among social science students, by presenting them the main theories and methods used in physics and chemistry conceptually without any use of mathematics. In the first part of the course we cover the main topics in classical physics such as Newton’s laws of motion, Law of Universal Gravitation, Electromagnetic Theory, Thermodynamics and Optics. In the second part of the course we study the most important theories in modern physics Einstein’s Theories of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, as well as their consequences. We end the course by introducing the main concepts in modern chemistry.
