Objectives of the Course The course aims to enable students to understand the trajectory of contemporary Islamic thought in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey and to develop their own ideas on the issues discussed.
Course Content This course aims to cover Ottoman philosophical thought from the Tanzimat period until the mid-Republic period. The main thrust of the course is to show the dialogue between classical Islamic philosophy and Western philosophy through the Islamic and Westernized thinkers. The method of the course is to investigate the main philosophical questions of existence, knowledge, ethics, and politics through the thinkers in late Ottman Emprire and early Turkish Republic.
