Dersin Amacı
|
The purpose of this course is to promote critical thinking and develop skills for assessing media and their content. It will help to conduct critical examination and research. Students will be able to read an article or watch a program or observe a genre of mass media and put it into sociological and/or political and/or business and/or aesthetic perspective and be able to discuss it rationally, clearly. We will read and examine various critical studies and methods, discussing them, and then applying them to the real world. We will follow A. Asa Berger’s now-seminal “four techniques of media interpretation.” The coverage of these four techniques—semiotic theory, psychoanalytic theory, Marxist theory, and sociological theory—will be augmented with real-life examples.
