Objectives of the Course The objectives of the course are:
-to make the students comprehend the origin and historical development of the siyar discipline among the Islamic sciences,
-to enable them to obtain a theoretical framework in which they can evaluate the life and time of the Prophet Muhammadas the last messenger of Allah.
to comprehend the important persons in the life of Muhammad and their contributions to the formation of the early Muslim community.
Course Content This course entails a study of the most important events in the life of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It will cover the religious, cultural and political structure of siyar geography, the primary and ancillary sources of siyar, and deals with important benchmarks of Muhammad's life within the framework of his prophetic mission and exemplary role.

Assessment and Grading Scale
Grading will be based on:
1) Class participation (10%)
2) Response Paper (%10)
2) Mid-term exam (30%)
3) Final Exam (50%)

Class attendance: At least 80% attendance is required.

During the course the students will be required to submit 1 assignment worth 10% of the final grade. The assignment will be a review of a book written on siyar.
Midterm and final exams consisting of open-ended questions will be held in the designated exam timeline by the university. Exam questions will be aimed at measuring the knowledge and skills of the students acquired in the course.

Class Norms/ Expectations
This is a face to face course. The course is instructional-led and have 14 weeks of lecture plus an additional final exam week. Each course will have recommended readings and audio content, different types of visuals such as documentaries, short film excerpts, photographs, maps, so that the students are engaged and provided with the optimum learning experience.
Discussions of course readings and other required study materials will occur with the students and the instructor physically located in the same place at the same time. The instructor will take part in, and guide, these discussions. Such discussions serve as an important assessment point for both teachers and students to assess their understanding and progress.

1. Attendance-Participation: Students are required to attend class regularly and participate in discussions. Questions, feedback, and student interaction are an integral part of the learning process. Students should come prepared, having read the assigned materials prior to coming to class and having course materials accessible during class. Failure to attend a 3-week class without a reasonable excuse is a reason to fail. Chronic absences, tardiness and leaving early will adversely affect your grade. Absences due to illness or emergencies must be communicated to the instructor prior to the class.
2. Basic classroom rules: While in class, students are expected to use appropriate language with the instructor as well with each other, have their cell phones on silent and not be involved in personal conversations with each other or any activities which would disrupt the classroom environment. Infraction of these rules will result in a deduction of points from the class participation grade.
3. Plagiarism: The university takes plagiarism, copying someone else’s work and representing it as your own, very seriously. This applies to all work submitted for the course. Plagiarism, academic dishonesty, or cheating will result in an automatic grade of F for the course. If a student’s work is suspected of plagiarism, the student as well the Institute’s office will be notified of the offence and it will be the student’s responsibility to demonstrate evidence reflecting the originality of the work, such as all notes and other materials utilized in developing the submitted work.
4. Assignment paper format:
Between 1000-1500 words.
Must be double-spaced, in 12-point font size, with 1 inch margins on all sides.
The text should be spell-checked; all foreign words should be italicized.
Isnad reference system should be used in the text.
Provide a bibliography of sources at the end of your paper.
The books to be reviewed will mainly be chosen with consultation of the instructor.
